Early in The Morning, Begin Today’s Morning Workout in The First Light Of Dawn—yoga Ball.

Sep 20, 2026

Early in the morning, begin today's morning workout in the first light of dawn-yoga ball.

Many people think that a yoga ball is merely a tool to aid relaxation, but only those who have actually practised it realise that this round ball presents a considerable challenge. The inherent instability of the ball forces us to engage our deep core muscles-which are usually difficult to activate-whilst constantly controlling our bodies and finding our centre of gravity. Each set of poses requires us to focus on our breathing and stabilise both body and mind.

This comprehensive yoga ball sequence is carefully structured, progressing step by step from warm-up to asanas and finally to relaxation.

It begins with basic warm-ups such as the right-angle seated pose and the right-angle seated leg lift, which awaken the hips and abdomen whilst gradually allowing the body to adapt to the ball. I had to try the right-angle seated double leg lift several times before I managed it; the side plank variation also took repeated attempts before I finally mastered it. Only the final one-legged downward dog, when compared to practising on the floor, was not quite as well executed, so there is still room for further refinement.

We then moved on to Plank, Downward-Facing Dog and One-Legged Downward-Facing Dog, using the yoga ball for support to lengthen the spine, stretch the hamstrings and build strength in the limbs whilst moving gently; we then transitioned to Side Plank, Side Plank variations and a modified Grand Salutation, strengthening the obliques from multiple angles and opening the chest; followed by Fish Pose and its variations, before finally experiencing Pear Pose whilst holding the ball between the legs.

With the ball supporting the back, we performed a gentle backbend to release tension in the shoulders and upper back. The entire sequence balanced strength, balance and stretching, concluding with relaxation against the ball and a supine position with bent knees, allowing the body a period of gentle recovery.

✅ Side Plank Variation on a Large Ball

Position your side against the yoga ball, with the lower leg straight and both feet crossed front to back, firmly planted on the mat; extend both arms upwards towards the ceiling, keeping the pelvis stable, the core engaged, and breathing evenly. Hold for 3–5 breaths.

Benefits: Strengthens the obliques and shoulders, improves balance, and stretches the lateral torso.

✅ Wide-Footed Plank on a Yoga Ball

Place your hands directly beneath your shoulders, with the tops of your feet resting on the yoga ball; keep your body in a straight line from head to toe, engage your core, avoid arching your lower back or sticking your bottom out, and breathe steadily.

Benefits: Strengthens the core and arms throughout the body, and builds trunk stability.

✅ One-Legged Downward-Facing Dog with Foot on Yoga Ball

Press your hands firmly into the mat, place one foot on top of the yoga ball, and raise the other leg upwards; push your sitting bones upwards, lengthen your back, keep your shoulders away from your ears, and maintain steady breathing.

Benefits: Stretches the back of the thighs, activates shoulder and back strength, and improves balance and body control.

✅ Yoga Ball Bridge Pose

Lie on your back with your shins resting on the yoga ball and both feet flat against it; place your arms at your sides with palms facing down. Inhale as you lift your hips upwards, opening your chest whilst keeping your shoulders and back pressed firmly into the mat; maintain steady breathing.

Benefits: Opens the chest, engages the glutes, stretches the front of the thighs and relaxes the lower back.

✅ Supine Single-Leg Lift (Foot on Yoga Ball)

Lie on your back with one leg resting on the yoga ball and the other leg extended and raised upwards; keep your shoulders and back pressed to the floor, engage your core, ensure the lower back remains in contact with the mat, and breathe slowly.

Benefits: Strengthens the core, stretches the legs and improves pelvic stability.

✅ Shoulder Stand Variation (Legs Resting on a Yoga Ball)

Lie on your back, supporting your lower back with your elbows on the floor; lift both legs upwards, resting the soles of your feet lightly on the yoga ball; keep your neck relaxed, press your shoulders firmly into the mat, and breathe slowly and deeply.

Benefits: Relieves fatigue, lengthens the spine, and promotes blood circulation in the lower limbs.

When practising on a mat, your centre of gravity is stable. On a yoga ball, however, even the slightest loss of balance prompts your body to automatically adjust. There is no need to strive for perfection in the pose; the focus is on feeling the abdominal muscles engage and the spine lengthen, learning to find your own stability amidst instability. Every time you persevere, you are honing your concentration and core control.

Ball yoga is ideal for those who sit for long periods, as it relaxes a stiff lower back, activates a dormant core and improves posture.

Practice tips:

Ensure your mat is non-slip and do not over-inflate the yoga ball;

Beginners may reduce the range of motion; those with lower back injuries or high blood pressure should practise with caution;

Breathe naturally throughout; do not hold your breath; stop immediately and rest if you feel any discomfort.

The beauty of yoga extends far beyond the mat. Swap your mat for a large ball, try a different approach, and experience a whole new sense of openness in your body. Through your morning practice, build up the strength you'll need for the day ahead.
