We have recently encountered many kidney patients, and even healthcare professionals, who have told us that the ball-squeezing exercise is ineffective. However, follow-up data indicates that this exercise plays a significant role in promoting the maturation of the fistula, and that practising it over the long term has marked benefits in terms of needle insertion, preventing stenosis and thrombosis. Whilst many kidney patients are already performing this exercise, it is worth considering whether they are doing it correctly. Today, we will guide you through the correct way to perform the ball-squeezing exercise from several perspectives.
Why should you perform the ball-squeezing exercise?
1. To promote fistula maturation
2. To increase arterial blood flow
3. Daily maintenance of blood vessels
When can you perform the ball-squeezing exercise?
1. Before fistula creation.
2. Three days after an autologous fistula procedure, provided there is no bleeding from the wound, you may begin the ball-squeezing exercise.
3. Three days after a synthetic graft procedure, provided there is no bleeding from the wound, you may also perform the ball-squeezing exercise to promote the reduction of swelling and improve blood circulation.
4. Once you have started dialysis using an autologous fistula, do not perform the exercise on the day of dialysis; it may be performed on all other days.
How should one select the resistance level of a grip ball?
1. Generally, a grip ball with a resistance of 20 pounds is suitable.
2. Male dialysis patients may opt for a 30-pound grip ball.
3. Elderly people, children and those with reduced strength may choose a 20-pound grip ball, but one with a softer texture.
How should one select the type of grip ball?
1. It is recommended to choose a doughnut-shaped or spherical grip ball.
2. Silicone is the recommended material.
3. Choose a grip ball with a smooth surface; otherwise, prolonged use may cause hand pain.
How should grip ball exercises be performed correctly?
1. Ensure your arm is fully extended when performing grip ball exercises.
2. When gripping the ball, hold it firmly and maintain the grip for 5 seconds.
3. Exercise three times a day, for 15 minutes each session.
