During the eccentric or descending portion of the bench press, the bar path should move in a downward curve, starting more forward, then the bar lowers at an angle until it reaches the desired bar contact point on the lifter's chest.
During the concentric or ascending portion of the bench press, the bar path moves upward in a nearly straight line until the triceps are activated, then ideally begins to curve toward the lifter's face, forming a "J" shaped curve.
While the exact bar path for the bench press is not set in stone, as every lifter has different body proportions and biomechanics, the general concept of how the bar should move during the bench press remains the same.
Since lifters are underneath the bar as it moves, it can be difficult to self-assess their bar path, so there are a few postural points they can check to ensure they are using the correct bar path during the bench press.
There are several posture points that can help the exerciser achieve proper barbell path as long as they pay attention to them accordingly, the most important of which is that at the beginning of each rep, the exerciser will immediately affect their barbell path by starting the rep with the barbell resting too low on the neck or sternum.
The correct posture point in this situation is to place the barbell above the shoulders and collarbones, providing a strong and efficient start to the rep. Another posture point that applies to this situation is that the exerciser's elbows are turned outward, forcing the barbell to move higher, resulting in an inefficient barbell path.
