The deadlift is another classic barbell exercise. It works the glutes, hamstrings, and core muscles.
Start by placing the barbell on the floor in front of you, with your feet hip-width apart.
Bend over and grip the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart (palms facing your body, thumbs wrapped around the bar).
Keep your knees slightly bent, chest up, and back straight. Pull the barbell up slightly until you feel tension.
Push through your heels, imagining you're pressing your feet into the floor. Pause briefly in a standing position and squeeze your glutes.
Slowly and controlled lower the barbell back to the floor.
Repeat for your desired number of repetitions.
Barbell Press
The overhead press uses a similar pushing motion to the bench press but places greater emphasis on the shoulders.
Start in a standing position with your feet hip-width apart. Hold the barbell just above your chest in front of your neck with your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
As you lift the barbell overhead, engage your core and glutes. This will help you maintain a powerful, safe, and stable pressing position. Try not to arch your back or tilt your head forward.
Lower the barbell to your chest.
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
In the overhead press, the barbell comes very close to your face, which may take some time to get used to. You may need to actively tuck your chin.
How Barbell Training Can Help You Achieve Your Strength Training Goals
When strategically incorporated into your strength training program, barbell training can help you progressively lift heavier weights and move toward your strength goals. Take the time to learn the proper technique slowly and safely. Start with lighter weights and fewer repetitions, then gradually increase the intensity as you become more comfortable. Consider seeking help from an experienced workout partner or fitness professional to refine your form and ensure safety as you gain confidence with barbell training.
