If you're already accustomed to dumbbell workouts or other strength training and are ready for a new challenge, consider incorporating some barbell exercises into your routine-this is exactly the next step you need to take.

For beginners, it's best to familiarize yourself with other forms of strength training before picking up a barbell. You should have some practice, experience, and proficiency with the exercises you plan to perform using a barbell.

For example, before attempting barbell back squats, you should have already performed dumbbell goblet squats. Or, if you've done bent-over dumbbell rows or dumbbell deadlifts and now want to try these movements with a barbell, you'll only be safe when you're fully confident in the actual movements.

Even if you're already accustomed to performing certain exercises with heavy dumbbells, as a barbell beginner, it's best to start with an empty bar and not rush to add weight. This allows you to get used to the grip and observe how your body reacts to the barbell.

It's worth seeking professional guidance when you first start. A trainer can help you learn basic barbell movements, correct your form, and ensure your safety and protection from injury.

Barbell Safety Tips

Increase the weight gradually. Add a little at a time, and see how your body responds before adding more weight.

Perform barbell exercises slowly and with control, especially when you're just starting out and need to get a feel for the new movements.

Warm up before your barbell workout (just like with any workout!). It's recommended to start with bodyweight or dumbbell exercises that mimic the movements you'll later perform with the barbell. For example, do a few sets of bodyweight or dumbbell goblet squats before moving on to barbell front squats, or do some push-ups before your barbell bench press.
