Substitution Rules in Basketball
When referees administer substitutions, they should observe the following points:
Substitution Timing:
Once a substitution has occurred, the player who became a substitute and the substitute who entered the game cannot re-enter or exit again until the game clock has run during live play and the ball becomes dead again.
Unreasonable Delay:
If a substitution causes an unreasonable delay (over approximately 30 seconds), the team will be charged with a timeout. If no timeouts remain, a technical foul will be charged to the coach, and penalties will be enforced accordingly.
After Final Free Throw:
Following the last or only free throw, if the ball becomes dead (e.g., after a made basket), the free throw shooter may be substituted. At this time, the opposing team may also make a substitution, provided the request is made before the ball becomes live again.
Mandatory Substitution:
During the game, if the free throw shooter is injured, has committed five fouls, or has been disqualified, a substitution is mandatory. The substitute player must take the free throw.
3x3 Basketball Rules
Each team plays with three players on the court.
Scoring:
Shots made inside the three-point line = 1 point
Shots made outside the three-point line = 2 points
Free throws = 1 point
Possession After Score:
After each made basket, the opposing team checks the ball from the check-line (usually near the top of the arc in half-court).
Shot Clock: 20 seconds per possession.
3-Second Rule: No offensive or defensive three-second violations in 3x3.
