The Encyclopædia Britannica records that "in the 40th century BCE, traces of boxing were discovered in the regions of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers." The ancient Egyptians recorded boxing equipment, such as "leather straps," using hieroglyphics. Around the 17th century BCE, boxing spread to ancient Greece via the Mediterranean island of Crete.
In ancient Olympic boxing, the sport remained an amateur physical exercise activity focused on physical training until the mid-period. During this time, boxers used soft leather straps wrapped around their hands and forearms, aiming to injure or knock out their opponents. However, by the late period, boxing had taken a darker turn. Rulers of the Roman Empire sought excitement by having boxers wrap leather straps with sturdy, sharp copper buckles around their hands, while also holding lead weights or metal cylinders during matches. Boxing was eventually banned in 404 AD. Although these historical records are brutal and bloody, this is likely the origin of the primitive boxing gloves and hand wraps.
In modern times, boxing pioneers still fought until they were bloodied and bruised. Those who have seen the movie "Sherlock Holmes" starring Robert Downey Jr. as "Iron Man" may recall a memorable scene.
In the 19th-century Irish song "The Rocky Road to Dublin," Holmes, bare-chested and bare-fisted, dances to the music's rhythm in an underground boxing match, brutally beating his opponent. Yes, this was the scene of boxing at the time. It wasn't until 1865 that the British nobleman Marquess of Queensberry established the "Queensberry Rules," requiring boxers to wear gloves during matches, thereby formally establishing the framework of modern boxing rules. However, even with gloves, boxing matches could still easily cause injuries to the hands, especially the wrists. It wasn't until the 1950s that people realized that using bandages could better protect the knuckles and wrists. Subsequently, hand bandages quickly became popular in boxing matches.
