Selecting and Cleaning Boxing Groin Guards
The primary function of a groin guard is to protect the groin and sensitive areas during daily training and intense competitions from accidental strikes that may occur during training. When a boxer is struck in the groin by an opponent, the groin guard helps to cushion and block the impact, thereby preventing or reducing direct physical harm.
In boxing, accidental strikes to the groin are common and frequent. Therefore, whether in sparring or competition, every boxer is required to wear groin guards that meet the standards set by boxing organizations. Selecting the right groin guard is crucial for boxers, similar to choosing a helmet. When selecting a groin guard, factors such as scientific design, comfort, protective performance, and convenience should be considered.
There are numerous types of boxing groin guards available, differing not only by brand but also in thickness, material, size, shape, and adjustability. Purchasing the appropriate groin guard is crucial, and the following factors should be considered prior to purchase:
Size
I typically categorize groin guards into three sizes: large, medium, and small.
Large-sized groin guards, in addition to being thicker in material, offer broader protection around the waist. For example, in many competitions, we can see that some boxers' groin guards protrude beyond the coverage of their boxing shorts.
Medium-sized groin guards, while slightly thinner in material, offer slightly less coverage than large-sized ones but compensate with increased agility.
Small-sized groin guards are common and frequently used in daily training. Its primary protective area is the vital regions, while the remaining components are primarily elastic bands that serve to secure the groin guard in place.
Additionally, please pay attention to personal hygiene and avoid being lazy.
After each use, promptly clean the inner side of the groin guard with a soft towel dampened with water to remove sweat, especially focusing on removing sweat stains from the seams (no one wants the seams to harden from prolonged exposure to sweat, affecting comfort). Then, place it in a cool, well-ventilated area to air dry. If there are removable straps, they should be regularly removed for routine cleaning.
