Crossbar Face Saver
As the name suggests, the FACE SAVER provides the most comprehensive protection. It is often used by professional boxers during pre-match training to prevent injury.
Advantages: Except for the slightly exposed chin (which can be tucked in), the face is fully protected. The steel crossbar design absorbs frontal impacts effectively.
Disadvantages: Poor visibility, bulky and heavy, limited adjustability, and the least comfortable option. First-time users may feel pressure on the cheekbones and temples.
Fully Enclosed Helmet
Not suitable for general use, this helmet is best for children, beginners, or boxers with a history of nosebleeds. It typically features a hard face mask for protection, combined with inner lining similar to a full-face helmet, thereby improving chin protection.
Advantages: Offers unmatched full protection and better comfort than the face saver.
Disadvantages: Worst visibility, heavy and not suitable for long sessions. It can be useful as a transitional tool to help beginners adapt to real sparring.
Note: Some fully enclosed helmets are designed for modular use. For instance, one version allows beginners to use the full face mask initially, then remove it to convert the helmet into a standard full-face version once they've gained confidence.
This article offers guidance based on helmet types and their features. Ultimately, helmet selection should be based on individual training goals. If your defensive skills are underdeveloped, consistently choosing low-protection helmets is unwise. On the other hand, at more advanced levels, selecting ultra-protective helmets out of fear of injury can limit skill improvement.
Although this article doesn't evaluate specific brands, it is generally advisable to choose helmets from established, professional boxing manufacturers rather than those focused on MMA.
