Which muscles can be trained with pull-ups?

 

① Latissimus dorsi The primary functions of the latissimus dorsi include shoulder extension (pulling the upper arm backward when it is in front) and shoulder adduction (pulling the upper arm inward when it is on the sides).

Therefore, pull-ups can target the latissimus dorsi.

 

② Teres major muscle The functions of the teres major muscle are similar to those of the latissimus dorsi muscle, including shoulder extension and shoulder adduction.

Therefore, pull-ups can also target the teres major muscle.

 

③ Biceps brachii/Triceps brachii The function of the biceps brachii is elbow flexion, while the function of the triceps brachii is shoulder extension.

 

④ Trapezius muscle The middle bundle of the trapezius muscle functions to retract the scapula.

During pull-ups, the scapula also contracts to some extent, but not as much as during rowing exercises, so the middle bundle of the trapezius muscle is not heavily engaged.

The lower bundle functions to depress the scapula, and during pull-ups, the scapula must be depressed, so the lower bundle is also engaged.
