Standing Dumbbell Single-Leg Calf Raise
Standing Dumbbell Single-Leg Calf Raise is a unilateral exercise that works one leg at a time.
You may be wondering why you would choose a single-leg exercise over a regular double-leg exercise.
While both strengthen and tone the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, single-leg calf raises have additional benefits.
Unilateral exercises work both sides of the body independently, which helps correct muscle imbalances.
The weaker side is forced to work harder, while the stronger side doesn't compensate, which also avoids overuse of compensatory muscles.
How to do it
Stand parallel to a wall.
Place your inside hand on the wall slightly above your shoulders.
Hold a dumbbell in your outside hand.
Keep your inside foot slightly off the ground throughout the exercise.
Press down hard on the ball of your outside foot.
Raise your heel as high as possible.
Carefully return your heel to the starting position.
Things to note
Keep your spine neutral to prevent back injuries.
Place your hands lightly on the wall, do not lean against it, this will help improve your balance.
Avoid bending your ankles to the sides to protect your ankle joints.
