Key principle: avoid compensation and injury
1. Reject "inertia leverage"
Both rolling and returning should be controlled at a uniform speed. It is forbidden to use the inertia of body swing to drive the wheel (such as throwing it out quickly and then throwing it back), otherwise the training effect will be greatly reduced and the waist and abdominal muscles may be strained.
2. Control the amplitude and proceed step by step
Beginners should prioritize ensuring the standard of action rather than pursuing the rolling distance.
If the waist is obviously sore, the waist is collapsed or the buttocks are tilted up when rolling, it means that the amplitude has exceeded the ability range and needs to be reduced (only roll 10-20 cm).
3. Core first, not arms
The core training target of the ab wheel is the abdomen and deep waist and abdomen muscles.
The arms only play the role of "conduction force" and "stabilization", rather than actively exerting force to "push/pull" the wheel.
If you feel that the arm is more sore than the abdomen, it means that the action is wrong (over-reliance on arm strength).
Common mistakes and corrections
- ❌ Slumped waist/waist concave: The core is not tightened, which can easily hurt the lumbar spine → Tighten the abdomen deliberately and imagine "the waist is close to the ground";
- ❌ Shrugging shoulders/hugging chest: The shoulder blades are not fixed → Lower the shoulders, keep the shoulders away from the ears, and keep the back straight;
- ❌ Hips sit back when returning to the starting position: Use the hips to compensate for the core → Focus on abdominal contraction when returning to the starting position, and keep the thighs (kneeling position) or legs (standing position) stable;
- ❌ Wrist pain: Improper grip or weak wrist strength → Adjust the grip to the same width as the shoulders. Beginners can first strengthen the wrist strength (such as dumbbell curls).
