The most important part of a golf club is the shaft. One of the most important aspects of a shaft is the flex of the shaft. Flex refers to the stiffness of the shaft. If you look at a variety of golf shafts in a golf pro shop and swing a set of golf clubs, you will notice that some shafts are stiffer than others. The stronger the player is physically, the stiffer the shaft will be.

The stiffer the shaft, the less flexible it is. When a player swings the club, the club head acts as a force of gravity at the end of the club, causing the shaft to bend. When the player hits the ball with the club head on the downswing, the shaft is forced to bend. If the shaft is too soft and the flex is too great, the player cannot control the direction of the ball. The flex of the shaft is the amount of power generated when hitting the ball. If the shaft is not flexible enough, the shot loses power and accuracy is affected. So you want to pick a shaft with the right amount of flex. Generally speaking, the stiffer the shaft, the more accurate the shot, but the distance is reduced.
