What is a PICC Catheter Grip Ball?
The PICC catheter grip ball is an assistive device designed to aid patients in performing hand and upper limb functional exercises following PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) placement. Using the grip ball through repeated squeezing motions promotes blood circulation, strengthens hand and upper limb muscles, and reduces catheter-related complications such as thrombosis. Its design is typically ergonomic for easy grip and use by patients.
Why use a grip ball?
Studies show that regular, effective ball squeezing dilates the vein on the catheter side, improving blood flow velocity, promoting circulation, reducing the incidence of upper limb venous thrombosis and complications, and lowering unplanned catheter removal rates.
How to perform the exercise?
Step 1: Extend the punctured arm horizontally to the side at a 30°-60° angle from the torso. Hold the grip ball upward, squeeze it firmly for 2 seconds, slowly release all fingers to allow the ball to rebound for 2 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
Step 2: With the punctured arm extended laterally, bend it upward 90 degrees. Squeeze the grip ball forcefully, then move the arm forward toward the body and back. Release the grip ball. Repeat 10 times.
Step 3: With the punctured arm extended laterally, squeeze the grip ball forcefully. Swing the arm upward toward the ear and back. Release the grip ball. Repeat 10 times.
What are the precautions?
1. Begin ball squeezing exercises 24 hours after catheter placement.
2. Squeeze the ball until it reduces to half its original size for effective exercise.
3. Rotate the wrist joint to relax after completing each set.
4. Perform 3-4 times daily (after breakfast, lunch, dinner, and before bedtime) to effectively prevent blood clot formation.
