Field hockey, one of the oldest and most prestigious sports in the Olympic Games, derives its name from the French word meaning "shepherd's stick." As one of the world's oldest sports, it existed more than 1,200 years before the original Olympic Games. Modern field hockey began in Britain in the early 19th century and was first included as an official Olympic event at the 1908 London Games. It became a permanent event in 1928, and a women's competition was added in 1980.
In field hockey, each team may register up to 16 players, with no more than 11 players-including the goalkeeper-on the field at the same time. All players can be substituted, but substitutions must take place at the designated area near the center line. The match lasts 60 minutes, divided into four 15-minute quarters. There is a two-minute break after the first and third quarters, and a 10-minute halftime break after the second quarter. The winner is determined by the final score.
Ice hockey, on the other hand, is a fast-paced team sport that combines advanced skating ability with highly skilled stick handling. It is one of the most physically demanding and competitive ice sports. Players wear skates and use sticks to control and battle for the puck on the ice.
