Rule Changes to Prevent Throws Exceeding 100 Meters

The official world record for the men's javelin throw is 98.48 meters (J. Zelezny, 1996). In fact, an astonishing throw exceeding 100 meters was recorded as early as 1984 (U. Hohn, 104.80 meters). However, if the flight distance is too long, it can interfere with other events and pose a safety hazard. Therefore, the competition rules were revised in 1986, moving the javelin's center of gravity forward by 4 centimeters to limit the flight distance to within 100 meters (the current recognized world records are those set by men after 1986 and by women after 1999).

Since the implementation of the new rules, the evolution of the men's javelin world record has been as follows. Although J. Zelezny's 98.48 meters was an outstanding achievement, in 2020, J. Vetter recorded a throw of 97.76 meters, coming close to the world record. At the 18th IAAF World Championships in Athletics (Oregon 2022), scheduled for July 2022, the world record-which has remained unbroken for over 20 years-may finally be surpassed.

The Goal for the Women's World Record is to Exceed 73 Meters

The evolution of the top 10 women's javelin world records is as follows. The world record under the new rules stands at 72.28 meters (B. Spotakova, 2008), and there are five records exceeding 70 meters. All eyes are on who will be the first to break the 73-meter barrier.
