Correct Use of a Massage Ball
When using a massage ball for full-body release, be sure to avoid areas with a high concentration of nerves and blood vessels, such as the back of the knees, the groin, the armpits and the front of the neck. If you experience any sharp, stabbing pain, a burning sensation or an electric shock-like sensation whilst using the massage ball, stop immediately, remove the ball completely from that area and try again.
(1) Full-Body Release with a Massage Ball
1. Massage Ball – Seated Foot Rolling
Objective: To relax the muscles and fascia of the sole of the foot, relieve tension in the sole, and enhance proprioception.
Difficulty Level: Beginner
Sit on a chair, maintaining the spine's natural curvature and engaging your core slightly. Place the massage ball on the floor, stand with one foot on the ball, and keep the other foot firmly planted on the floor to maintain balance. Slowly shift your body weight onto the ball and roll it sideways or lengthways, ensuring even pressure across the sole of the foot. Once your foot has adapted, you may gradually increase the pressure until you feel a mild soreness or tightness. Complete the prescribed time on one side, then switch to the other.
Points to note: Ensure that the rolling speed remains slow throughout the entire process. Perform 3 sets, 1 minute per side.
2. Massage Ball – Standing Gluteal Roll Against a Wall
Target: To relax the gluteus maximus and alleviate soreness and stiffness in the glutes, as well as pain caused by prolonged sitting.
Difficulty Level: Beginner
Stand with your back to a wall, maintaining a distance of approximately one foot's width. Place the massage ball against the back of your buttocks, slightly tuck in your abdomen and keep your back straight. Bend your knees slightly and control the massage ball so that it rolls slowly over the target muscle group (you may roll it up and down or in circles), focusing on areas of muscle tension or tender points. When you locate a distinct sore spot, pause and apply increased pressure for 15–30 seconds. Once you have completed the prescribed time on one side, switch to the other side.
Precautions: If you experience numbness in the lower limbs or radiating pain, stop immediately and reduce the pressure or adjust the position of the ball. Perform 3 sets, 1 minute per side.
