Key Points for Resistance Band Training Plans for Older Adults

The 10 exercises listed above are all well-suited to being performed whilst seated and can be incorporated into your daily training routine. To ensure your training is truly effective, it is particularly important to plan your programme sensibly. Many older adults approach exercise rather haphazardly, with intermittent sessions and a lack of regularity. To steadily improve strength and physical fitness, drawing up a plan and sticking to it over the long term is key.

An effective strength training programme relies on three core elements: training frequency, training volume and training intensity. These principles apply regardless of age-whether for younger or older adults-and are straightforward to understand and implement.

1. **Training Frequency**:

Exercising just once a week is not intense enough to yield noticeable improvements; conversely, exercising every day can easily lead to physical overload. We recommend 2–5 sessions per week. For older adults with limited mobility or lower fitness levels, two sessions per week is preferable; for those in better physical condition with a background in exercise, 3–4 sessions per week is more suitable.

2. **Training Volume**:

This refers to the total number of sets completed for a single exercise over the course of a week.

For example: if a resistance band stretch session consists of 3 sets of 20 repetitions each, and you train three times a week, you will have completed a total of 9 sets of that exercise in a week.

3. **Training intensity**:

This refers to the level of effort required to perform the exercise. Taking the same resistance band stretch of 20 repetitions per set as an example, if it is completed with ease, it is considered low-intensity; if you feel strained and close to exhaustion after completing the 20 repetitions, it is considered high-intensity training.

If you are looking for a comprehensive resistance band training programme for older adults, you can combine the exercises listed above with the recommended frequency and number of sets.
