Kick-off Rules
The match begins with a place kick from the midpoint of the halfway line. After a team scores, the opposing team restarts play with a drop kick from the same location. The kicking team must be behind the ball, and the receiving team must be behind their own 10-meter line. The kick must travel at least 10 meters before it is contested.
Basic Offense and Passing
The game starts with a kickoff from the center. Players must respect the 10-meter zone and avoid encroachment before the ball crosses it.
Passing in rugby is strictly lateral or backward; forward passes are illegal and result in a penalty. If a teammate catches the ball while ahead of the ball carrier, they are considered offside, and the opposing team receives a penalty kick from the point of infraction.
When the ball carrier is tackled and cannot advance, they must immediately release the ball. They are not permitted to pass it to a teammate while grounded. The ball becomes free for both teams to contest.
It is illegal to charge, block, or obstruct players not in possession of the ball. Defenders may use legal techniques such as grabbing, tackling, or pushing, but contact must be made shoulder to shoulder-striking the chest, back, kicking, hitting, or tripping an opponent are serious fouls.
Major fouls result in a penalty kick for the opposing team; minor infractions may lead to a scrum restart at the point of violation.
Offside Rules
A player is offside when they are in a position that makes them ineligible to participate in the current phase of play. In general open play, any attacking player who is ahead of the ball carrier or kicker is considered offside.
