Ankle injuries are common sports injuries that can occur from sprains, falls, or other external forces. Proper rehabilitation is crucial for restoring joint function, reducing the risk of recurrence, and improving quality of life.
Ankle injury rehabilitation is typically divided into four phases, each with different goals and activities
In this phase, the goal is to reduce pain and swelling. Treatment can follow the RICE principle (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). In addition to the initial measures mentioned above, gentle joint motions, such as ankle rotations, can be initiated to promote circulation.
Once swelling and pain have decreased, the subacute phase can begin. The goal of this phase is to restore normal range of motion and function. Light stretching and strengthening exercises, such as ankle circles, calf stretches, and muscle strengthening with resistance bands, can be initiated.
During this phase, as joint function gradually recovers, more weight-bearing activities can be introduced, such as standing calf raises, balance exercises, and progressive weight training.
In this final phase, the goal is to return to pre-injury athletic performance. Some athletic training, such as jumping, sprinting, and agility drills, can be initiated. At the same time, attention should be paid to strengthening ankle stability to reduce the risk of future injury.
