Ankle Myths
"As long as it doesn't hurt, it's fine."
Scientific Truth: Approximately 56% of ankle injuries are "hidden," initially causing only mild discomfort or decreased range of motion without noticeable pain.
By the time you feel pain, the damage has often already accumulated to a certain extent. Many people's "habitual sprains" begin when they "don't hurt" the first time.
Scientific Truth: Excessive static stretching, especially before exercise, can reduce ligament elastic potential energy and joint stability, increasing the risk of sprains.
The key lies in dynamic activation and neuromuscular control training (such as standing on a balance ball), not simply pursuing "softness."
Scientific Truth: Ankle braces are a "crutch" during the acute phase, not a "guard" for daily use. Long-term use of ankle braces can "trick" your proprioception system, making the muscles around the ankle "lazy," leading to decreased stability. They should be used for post-injury protection or specific heavy impacts, and should never replace your own strength.
The truth: This is a dangerous misconception! Studies show that the recurrence rate of ankle sprains without systematic rehabilitation is as high as 67%.
Resting only eliminates inflammation, but damaged ligaments, weakened muscles, and diminished proprioception will mercilessly betray you the next time you train.
A higher BMI increases the risk of sprains. Some veterans ignore the principle of gradual progression, leading to cumulative injuries.
