Knee braces are a broad category, with common products including patellar straps, knee braces, soft knee sleeves, and kinesiology tape. Different knee brace materials, textiles, and designs provide varying degrees of compression, pressure relief, and support.However, while knee pads offer protection, overuse can limit a baby's freedom of exploration and normal development.

One type of brace, called a hard brace, physically reduces impact and is commonly used when skiing, skating, or kneeling.

Another type of functional brace may offer some protection for patients after anterior cruciate ligament injury or reconstruction, acting like a crutch, providing temporary support and then discarded after recovery.

Patellar straps

Apply localized compression to the patellar tendon (the ligament beneath the knee) by altering stress distribution and reducing strain pain during exercise. Some high-end models feature built-in silicone pads or U-shaped supports to better conform to the patellar tendon's trajectory.

Intended users: Jumping athletes (such as basketball and volleyball), runners (with patellar tendon strain), and patients recovering from patellar tendon surgery (with physician guidance). Intended Use: Patellar braces are not meant to be worn at all times. Their use should focus on: during exercise, pre- and post-exercise training, and during daily activities such as walking down stairs or standing for extended periods, as well as squats, climbing stairs, and straight-leg raises during rehabilitation for patellar tendon pain.

Note: Wearing them for extended periods outside of exercise is ineffective and may even cause localized pressure and discomfort.

Contraindications: Not suitable for non-patellar tendon conditions such as patellar dislocation, synovitis, and joint effusion. Should not be used on those with broken skin, eczema, or allergies to the material; a lining should be used for isolation. This type of localized compression brace is not recommended during the acute postoperative period when swelling has not subsided.
