Soft knee pads are lightweight, breathable, and easy to wear. They are usually sleeve-style, made of a flexible, flexible material that provides comprehensive protection. Tightly wrapped around the front and sides, they generally provide adequate protection. Thin, soft knee pads offer little protection and can be painful under normal impacts. Therefore, soft knee pads made of thicker or even semi-soft materials are recommended for adequate protection.
Sleeve-style fastening systems can become loose if not properly sized or worn, and can shift position and require frequent adjustment. A combination of sleeve and strap fastening is recommended. Even thicker soft knee pads are ineffective against impacts with sharp ice shards, rocks, and hard ice surfaces. Soft knee pads should have a surface that distributes pressure points.
Hard knee pads feature a hard shell at the front of the pad that disperses significant impact pressure to the surrounding protective layer, distributing the impact from the front of the knee to the cushioning layer of the pad. A good hard shell is resilient and resistant to breakage.
Some hard-shell knee braces forgo ABS altogether and instead utilize EVA, a semi-soft material, for improved comfort and reduced weight. Hard knee braces are often secured with straps. Improper strapping can easily cause the brace to drift between the knees during activity, requiring adjustment. Hard knee braces often have an elastic EVA layer beneath the hard shell. EVA, similar to compressed foam, can withstand significant pressure but feels stiff, making it less comfortable. A sponge layer beneath the cushioning layer can improve comfort.
Highly elastic straps with Velcro are recommended for knee brace straps, while plastic buckles or clips are not recommended. Poor quality plastics can shatter under strong impact at low temperatures, causing secondary damage. External knee braces like those used in military or CS uniforms, such as the Black Hawk, have a soft, elastic rubber outer shell and a thinner EVA layer behind them, making them susceptible to damage from high impact. The buckles on high-end imitation knee braces become hard and brittle at low temperatures, potentially causing them to fall off or break during intense exercise.
