Adjusting and Replacing Shoulder Pads

The adjustment and replacement of shoulder pads depends primarily on how they are secured.

Sewn-on Shoulder Pads: These shoulder pads are typically secured to the garment with needle and thread.

Required Tools: Sewing needle, thread of a similar color to the garment, scissors, and a seam ripper (optional but recommended).

Steps:Positioning and Removal: Locate the seams that secure the shoulder pad. If the shoulder pad has shifted significantly or needs to be replaced, use a seam ripper to carefully remove the seams securing the shoulder pad and then remove the pad.

Adjusting and Securing: Position the shoulder pad in the ideal position, ensuring it aligns with the shoulder line and is symmetrical. Then, sew from the inside of the shoulder pad with needle and thread to secure it, ensuring the seams are secure and prevent movement. When sewing, be careful not to overtighten the seams to ensure the shoulder pad is loose and naturally curved. Inspection: After completion, carefully check the position and appearance of the shoulder pads to ensure symmetry between the two sides, and make minor adjustments as needed.

Internal, Removable Shoulder Pads: Some jackets (such as suits) have shoulder pads inserted through a "recess" on the sleeve lining.

Instructions:

Find the "recess" or "flat" seam on the sleeve lining where the seam is more defined and the stitching is visible.

Use a seam ripper to carefully remove the stitching at the recess.

Reach the recess between the jacket and lining through the recess, locate the shoulder pad, and gently pull it out.

If you need to adjust or replace it, follow these instructions. Once completed, sew the recess closed with a flat stitch.
