Potential Risks and Mitigations of Lumbar Support Use

Although lumbar supporters can provide immediate protection, improper use can lead to new health problems. Studies have found that wearing a lumbar supporter for more than eight hours continuously can reduce the electromyographic activity of the muscles surrounding the lumbar spine by 20%-30%. Long-term use can easily lead to muscle atrophy due to disuse.

In addition, the primary function of a lumbar support belt is to provide a certain degree of stability and support for the lumbar spine through external restraint. Excessive reliance on a lumbar support belt will inevitably lead to insufficient exercise of the lower back muscles, which can lead to decreased muscle strength over time and be detrimental to the sustainable health of the lumbar spine.

Therefore, wearing a lumbar support belt is primarily recommended during the acute phase of low back pain, during recovery from lumbar surgery, and in specific situations, such as during exercise, office work, and strenuous physical activity. It is more important to rely more on the core muscles of the lower back to strengthen and increase muscle mass and strength, thereby enhancing internal protection.

Some people experience abdominal compression symptoms, manifested as bloating and decreased appetite, which are related to a tight lumbar support belt restricting the movement of abdominal organs. Furthermore, poorly breathable waist braces may cause eczema on the lower back, which is particularly common in the summer or among those who sweat easily.

Mitigation methods include:

① Remove the waist brace every two hours while wearing it and perform five minutes of back and waist stretching exercises (such as the "Swallow Flying" exercise or standing against a wall);

② Choose elastic materials with ventilation holes to avoid overly tight waist-binding designs;

③ Perform core muscle exercises three times a week (such as planks, bodyweight hip bridges, and swallow poses) to strengthen lumbar spine stability.
