Plastic cup

Generally speaking, the bottom of a plastic cup is printed with numbers or abbreviations, which represent the plastic material of the cup.

Transparent cups used for milk tea [Polyethylene terephthalate (PET/01)]: transparent, bendable, crack-resistant, lightweight, good gas barrier effect, but poor heat resistance, will deform at around 70°C, so it can only be used for cold drinks or room temperature drinks.

Soft transparent plastic cups [Polyethylene (PE/04)]: not very common, and its heat resistance is not strong, and it will melt when it exceeds 110°C.

Non-disposable transparent water cups commonly used at home [Polypropylene plastic cups (PP/05)]: such as cups used for brushing teeth, have good thermal stability and can withstand high temperatures of 130°C, but the material is brittle and easy to break.

Hard disposable transparent plastic cups in restaurants [Polystyrene (PS/06)]: This type of plastic cup has low strength and poor heat resistance.

There is another common water cup - the space cup, which belongs to other plastic materials (PC/07).

When dining out, you may also encounter plastic cups similar to ceramics.

They are made of melamine resin and look a bit like ceramics, but they are much stronger than ceramics, not easy to break, and are non-toxic, odorless, acid-resistant and alkali-resistant, making them safer to use.

If you encounter a cup marked with "PVC/03", which is made of polyvinyl chloride, it is recommended not to use it.

Although this material is cheap and has good plasticity, harmful substances in the plasticizer will precipitate after exceeding 81°C, which is easy to cause cancer.
