Common Mistakes for Beginners Learning to Surf

Choosing the Wrong Surfboard Size: Insufficient Buoyancy

Initially, for surfers below the intermediate level, accurately observing and selecting waves can be challenging. Therefore, a larger surfboard (such as a beginner foam board or longboard) will make it easier to catch waves.

Using a shortboard offers less buoyancy and limited paddling speed, forcing you to rely more on gravity and the slope of the wave to provide acceleration for catching the wave. This can be difficult, if not impossible, for a beginner.

Using a larger surfboard means you have the flexibility to catch waves faster during the B phase of the wave (see the Wave Formation Stages notes for details). This is because a larger surfboard provides more buoyancy, making you less dependent on gravity and the acceleration created by the slope of the wave to catch the wave.

Common Mistake for Beginners: Choosing a smaller surfboard that is not suitable for your needs. Starting with a shortboard or a stiff board is not conducive to beginner learning. Beginners can initially practice catching waves using a larger foam longboard with greater buoyancy.

Fear of nose-diving causes you to lean too far back.

Misunderstanding nose-diving can lead to many problems and bad surfing habits.

A common phenomenon is that new surfers tend to lean back on the board, believing that leaning too far forward will put more weight on the nose of the board, causing it to dive. However, leaning too far back increases the resistance of the load, slowing your speed and failing to catch the wave, leading to missed waves.

Don't be afraid of nose-diving; ignore your instincts.

Besides leaning too far forward, another possible cause of nose-diving is being too far from the breaking wave, catching the wave at too steep an angle, or starting too late. Therefore, you need to catch a gentler wave, increase your paddling speed as much as possible, keep your head down, and keep your eyes focused toward shore.
