The Complete Guide to Surfing for Beginners
Surfboards
Almost all beginners start with a longboard. Generally, a longboard is one that's over 8 feet (approximately 2.43 meters) long.
In the early stages of surfing, a longboard provides ample buoyancy and stability, helping you practice catching waves and maintaining balance.
Longboards are categorized by material: foam or rigid. Most beginners start with a foam board. Foam boards are typically made of plastic foam and are wider and thicker than rigid boards. They are softer, more stable, and safer, making them suitable for beginners. In the early stages of surfing, stick with a foam board until you become proficient at catching green waves.
A rigid board is the transition point for every surfing student from beginner to advanced. Typically made of fiberglass or carbon fiber, it offers a strong surface and high flexibility.
Remember, before switching to a rigid board, make sure you're able to catch green waves and maintain control. A rigid board can cause serious injury to yourself or others in the event of a collision.
If you're buying a surfboard for the first time, it's recommended to start with a longboard that's about 1 to 1.2 meters longer than your height. If you're 1.65 meters tall, you can opt for a 9-foot (2.74 meters) or 9.2-foot (2.8 meters) board.
Leashes are crucial for keeping yourself and others safe while surfing. Especially for beginners, a leash can help you quickly find your board if you fall into the water and prevent it from being swept away by rip currents and endangering others.
When using a longboard, a thick 10-inch (25 cm) leash is generally recommended (either around the ankle or shin).
Before entering the water, be sure to check that your leash is secure, including at the connection to the board and at the ankle. For typhoon-like waves or high surf, opt for a sturdier leash specifically designed for big waves (Big Wave Leash).
