Early surfboards were made of solid wood and required advanced riding skills.

A solid surfboard is a solid piece of wood. This practice surfboard has not been confirmed to be made of wood, but given the technology of the time, it was likely a simple tree, polished smooth and flat.

Although surfboards are recorded as being made from trees, the type of wood varied by region, depending on the local species.

The first solid surfboards ranged from 10 to 20 feet in length and weighed approximately 35 kilograms. Unlike modern surfboards, solid surfboards lacked fins and could only be ridden straight, meaning everyone rode the same wave in a single line.

These surfboards remained in use until the late 1930s.

The first surfboard innovation occurred in the early 20th century when surfer George Freese decided to abandon his 16-foot surfboard and cut it in half. This move became a hot topic on Hawaiian beaches.

The first hollow surfboard was invented by an American surfer named Tom Blake. With new materials and technology, and with marine plywood and waterproof glue no longer widely used, Tom Blake used his knowledge and passion for surfing to build his first hollow board.
