Table Tennis Equipment: Types of Rubber-Backed Paddles

Choosing the right paddle is crucial in table tennis, as different rubber types greatly influence playing style and performance. Here's an overview of the most common sponge rubber paddles used by players of various skill levels and styles.

Short Pips-Out (Regular Pips) Sponge Paddle

This paddle features outward-facing rubber pips with equal height and diameter. Known for its excellent elasticity and fast, stable hits, it produces a slight sinking effect on the ball. It's ideal for players who rely on close-to-the-table quick attacks. If you have quick wrist movements but lack strong arm or core power, a short pips paddle that emphasizes speed over spin can be a great choice.

Medium-Long Pips-Out (Raw Pips) Sponge Paddle

Raw pips refer to outward-facing pips with a diameter greater than their height. These provide less spin and a noticeable sinking effect on contact. While not as spin-sensitive, they are effective for mid- to close-range players who favor disruption and control over heavy topspin.

Inverted (Pips-In) Sponge Paddle

Inverted rubbers have the smooth, sticky surface facing outward and the pimpled side glued to the sponge. This is the most popular type worldwide, especially among European players. Inverted rubbers offer exceptional spin potential, making them perfect for loopers and defensive players who use chops and spin variations. However, they can be harder to control due to their sensitivity to incoming spin.

Long Pips Sponge Paddle

With pips longer than 1.5mm, long pips rubber features soft, thin, and flexible pips with minimal support. It does not generate spin effectively on its own but manipulates incoming spin to create unpredictable returns. Due to its complexity and disruptive effects, long pips are banned in youth competitions and are not recommended for beginners or players with undeveloped technique.
