5. Legal Return
After the opponent serves or returns the ball, a player must strike it so it passes over or around the net assembly and lands on the opponent's court. If this is achieved, it is a legal return.
6. Point Awarding
A player loses a point if:
They fail to make a legal serve or return.
They obstruct the ball before it bounces on their side.
They strike the ball twice consecutively.
The ball hits their side of the table twice in succession.
An illegal racket surface is used.
In doubles, the players do not alternate correctly in hitting the ball.
Any other rule violation is committed.
7. Game and Match Structure
A game is won by the first player to reach 11 points, with at least a two-point lead. If the score reaches 10–10, play continues until one player achieves a two-point advantage.
A match consists of the best of five or seven games. Players may take up to two minutes of rest between games.
8. Expedite System
If a game lasts longer than 15 minutes and neither player has reached 11 points (unless both have at least 9 points), the expedite system is enforced:
The receiver must make 13 successful returns to win a point, or the server loses the point.
Players alternate serves after every point.
Once in effect, the expedite system remains for the rest of the match.
The time is tracked from the first rally of the game and paused during any official stoppage, such as retrieving a ball or equipment adjustments.
These rules are designed to ensure fairness, maintain the flow of the game, and handle interruptions or disputes effectively.
