Even trampolines in playgrounds equipped with safety nets and padding are not 100% safe, as many injuries occur on the trampoline itself. Current data indicates that these safety measures do not significantly reduce injury rates, and safety nets and padding may provide a false sense of security, leading to complacency. Children may also climb the safety nets out of curiosity or jump from a height onto the hard padding beside the trampoline, which can be an additional source of injury.
Another common misconception is that children will not get injured if an adult is watching them. Multiple studies show that nearly one-third to half of all injuries occur under adult supervision.
The most common trampoline-related injuries are ankle sprains, followed by abrasions, contusions, strains, and other soft tissue injuries. More severe injuries include fractures and dislocations, with head and neck injuries often being the most serious. Younger children are more prone to bone injuries, and those under 5 years old face a higher risk of fractures and dislocations.
What precautions should be taken if a child insists on using a trampoline?
Based on information from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Mayo Clinic, we recommend:
⚠️ Do not use home trampolines. If a child insists on playing, they should go to a children's trampoline park with safety measures and dedicated supervision, and parents must closely supervise them.
⚠️ Children under 6 should not use any trampolines (including those at recreational facilities and home trampolines).
To ensure children have fun while staying safe, parents should keep the following in mind:
👉 Thoroughly review safety guidelines before play and ensure your child understands and is willing to follow them;
👉 Limit use to one child per trampoline whenever possible. Do not allow children to play if multiple children are jumping, especially if there is a significant difference in age or weight;
👉 Limit the play area to a single trampoline; do not allow children to jump from one trampoline to another by stepping over the safety mats;
👉 Do not let children attempt dangerous moves, especially somersaults or mid-air spins, as these are the most common causes of permanent and severe cervical spine injuries. Also, do not let children climb to high places and jump down;
👉 Although outdoor trampoline facilities are generally maintained by professionals, parents should still carefully check that safety features are in place. For example, ensure the trampoline isn't too bouncy, the padding is intact, the safety netting isn't damaged, there are no hard objects around the trampoline that children could bump into, and the trampoline is level.
Finally, it's important to emphasize that no sport is 100% safe. Only by understanding the risks and engaging in activities with proper safety measures can you ensure your child's safety while they have fun.
