There is comparatively little research on lifting strap safety. To the best of our knowledge, only one cross-sectional self-report study has looked at the relationship between powerlifters' use of lifting straps and their current injuries. According to the findings, athletes who used lifting straps often had a 46% higher risk of knee injuries and a 68% higher risk of thoracic spine injuries. The researchers hypothesized that weight belts may impede trainees' ability to acquire appropriate starting postures and raise upper-body tension, even though this study was unable to establish a causal association. Weight belt use has been shown in earlier research to worsen thoracic kyphosis, which may result in poor training technique-a known risk factor for sports injuries.
Major limitations identified include:
1) small sample sizes;
2) unclear descriptions of research methods, with insufficient details on participants' training levels, equipment parameters (e.g., barbell bar diameter, grip material), and history of assist strap use;
3) inadequate reporting of training techniques, with consistency of technique across different experimental conditions not guaranteed;
4) few studies comparing the same absolute load;
5) lack of muscle tension-time data;
6) absence of data on adverse events, acute discomfort (e.g., wrist pain, skin injuries), and delayed onset muscle soreness;
7) most studies focus on acute effects, with no long-term data yet available to reveal the chronic impact of assist strap use on the aforementioned findings.
