PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

Resistance training is widely recommended for increasing muscle hypertrophy, strength, and overall physical fitness, while also offering health benefits, including a reduced risk of all-cause mortality. Properly regulating training variables-such as training volume and load-is key to optimizing the effects of skeletal muscle training.

Wrist straps are commonly used by resistance trainers to enhance athletic performance; they wrap around the wrist and secure the hand to resistance training equipment, thereby increasing grip strength when handling heavy loads. By combining muscle strength with the friction between the strap and the equipment, wrist straps transfer part of the load from the fingers to the wrist, allowing trainees to lift heavier weights during exercises that place high demands on grip strength. Wrist straps have become a common tool among recreational resistance trainers, bodybuilders, weightlifters, and powerlifters, and are particularly widely used in deadlifts and other pulling exercises. Some studies indicate that wrist straps can significantly improve performance in deadlifts, but this effect has not been consistently verified in other pulling exercises.

Consequently, existing research conclusions regarding the generalizability of the acute performance-enhancing effects of wrist straps in resistance training remain controversial; furthermore, research on the long-term effects and safety of incorporating wrist straps into routine resistance training is still relatively scarce. This study aims to summarize existing scientific findings on the benefits and drawbacks of using wrist straps in resistance training, identify research gaps, and provide recommendations for future studies.

🎯 Types and Uses of Wrist Straps

Wrist straps are band-like tools wrapped around the trainee's wrists and the barbell to establish a secure connection between the two. While different styles of wrist straps vary in appearance, their core function is to enhance grip strength. Currently, the five most commonly used types of wrist straps are traditional wrist straps, Olympic wrist straps, figure-8 wrist straps, pull hooks, and grip bands. Each type of grip strap is suited for specific training needs and scenarios and can be used with various resistance training equipment.

Traditional grip straps are wrapped around the wrist, looped behind the barbell toward the thumb, and secured tightly; typically, a single wrap is sufficient, as additional wraps can hinder the ability to release the barbell. Olympic grip straps feature a closed-loop design rather than a straight strap, making them safer to use and easier to release. Figure-8 straps are wrapped twice around the wrist, enhancing grip stability, but they can also restrict the ability to release the barbell or pose safety hazards. A pull hook features a fixed hook aligned with the direction of finger flexion, allowing the barbell to be supported without an active grip; however, it is still recommended that the lifter hold the barbell simultaneously. Grip straps consist of a sturdy wrist strap and a grip pad that wraps flexibly around the barbell, enhancing grip strength while facilitating quick release of the equipment.
