Sand Suit (Weighted Vest)

In the sensory integration training room, there are a number of pieces of equipment that may appear ordinary but are capable of precisely addressing the core needs of a child's sensory integration development. Although they are simple in structure and easy to use, they play an irreplaceable role in sensory integration intervention.

The Beijing Chunuan Children's Development Centre continues to shed light on two tools frequently used by sensory integration therapists in their daily practice-and which parents can also replicate at home-namely the sand suit and the balance beam. Neither requires complex operation, yet through play-based training, they help children regulate their arousal levels, extend their attention span, and strengthen their body control and bilateral coordination.

Points to Note:

Although the sand suit and the fitness bar are relatively easy to use, there are several points to bear in mind before use, particularly in the context of professional sensory integration assessments:

1. With regard to the sand suit, 'heavier is not necessarily better'. When the weight exceeds 10 per cent of the child's body weight, it can restrict chest expansion and affect breathing rhythm, thereby exacerbating attention deficits. Generally, one should start at 5 per cent of body weight and adjust gradually based on the child's tolerance on the day.

2. The resistance level and number of bends performed with the fitness bar are not the sole indicators of training intensity. Specific indicators such as the steadiness of breathing, the fluidity of movements and the speed of response to instructions often provide a better reflection of whether the training load is appropriate than the sheer number of movements performed.

3. There are significant differences in sensory regulation abilities between children; cooperation levels and session duration should be dynamically adjusted based on their mental state, sleep quality and vestibular stimulation. In cases of persistent emotional distress, delayed motor development or obvious sensory regulation abnormalities, a systematic sensory integration assessment should be conducted first, followed by the formulation of an equipment-based intervention plan. These two tools should always be regarded merely as supplementary components of a holistic programme.

We hope that by sharing this information, more parents will learn to use simple tools to provide their children with the most effective support.
