A good yoga mat should effectively cushion the impact of a hard surface on the body, provide good support and protection, and help users maintain stable training movements during exercise.

 

1. Size and Weight

To select the right size, we tested four aspects: length, width, thickness, and weight. The results showed that the three types of yoga mats differed significantly in width, with TPE mats being relatively wider. In terms of weight and thickness, NBR-material yoga mats are generally lighter and thicker, with a thickness of 10mm as the standard; natural rubber-material yoga mats are generally heavier and thinner, with a thickness typically not exceeding 5mm; TPE-material yoga mats have moderate weight and offer multiple thickness options.

 

2. Shock Absorption Effect

For fitness enthusiasts who enjoy aerobic exercises, yoga mats provide shock absorption and rebound, reducing noise while protecting joints.

We tested the impact absorption performance of the yoga mats. Higher values indicate stronger energy absorption capacity, reduced impact on the body, and better shock absorption effects.

 

The results showed that the impact absorption values ranged from 2.9% to 28.9%. The average value for NBR-material yoga mats was 15.4%, for TPE-material yoga mats it was 19.9%, and for natural rubber-material yoga mats it was 7.8%. Yoga mats made of NBR and TPE materials have better shock absorption effects than those made of natural rubber.

 

The average impact absorption value for standard-thickness mats was 19.9%, while that for thicker mats was 49.2%. This indicates that thicker yoga mats provide better shock absorption.

 

3. Slip resistance

Those who sweat a lot may have experienced slipping during exercise. Slip resistance is one of the main functions of a yoga mat, and both sides need to have good slip resistance to help users maintain balance, prevent slipping, and avoid injuries caused by the mat sliding. The results show that natural rubber mats have significantly better slip resistance than the other two materials.
