Several situations in which an offensive opportunity is lost:

1. The person holding the ball is tackled by the defense and falls to the ground, or the referee believes that his attack has been intercepted by the opponent's player (tackle) before he falls to the ground.

2. The quarterback's forward pass goes out of bounds, or touches the ground before anyone catches it, which is called an "incomplete pass". After the forward pass fails, the ball should be returned to the original offensive and defensive line position, using up one gear of offense and then starting again.

3. The player holding the ball goes out of bounds.

In addition, if one team scores or a player's helmet falls off, the offensive opportunity will end, which is called a dead ball. The referee will blow the whistle to notify.

Players and spectators often need to know which offense it is and how many yards are left before they can get four more chances. For example, before the first attack, the TV or scoreboard will write: "1st & 10", which means "This is the first attack, the goal is to advance 10 yards (to successfully accumulate 10 yards)". If an attack moves forward 3 yards, it will become: "2nd & 7", which means "Second attack, the goal is to continue to advance 7 yards"... and so on. If the offense has already entered the area within 10 yards of the goal line, the required yardage will no longer be reported, but "1st & Goal" will be reported instead, indicating the number of attempts to score, etc.
