American Football Overview

American football, also known simply as football in the United States, is a popular sport and a distinct form of rugby. It ranks among the top professional sports in North America. Originating from rugby football, the sport evolved significantly after being introduced to the U.S., adopting unique rules that differentiate it from its predecessor.

Unlike rugby, American football features a system of offensive and defensive lines competing in structured plays or "downs," with no restrictions on running routes and the allowance of forward passing. The primary objective of the game is to advance the ball into the opponent's end zone to score points. Scoring can be achieved in multiple ways, including carrying the ball across the opponent's goal line, passing it to a teammate within the end zone, or kicking the ball through the goalposts. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Due to the highly physical and contact-intensive nature of the sport, players wear protective gear such as helmets and pads to reduce the risk of injury during intense collisions.

Popularity and Major Competitions

Since the 1960s, American football has surpassed basketball and baseball as the most popular sport in the U.S. The annual championship game between the two major leagues-the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC)-is known as the Super Bowl. This event attracts massive television audiences, often exceeding half of all U.S. households, and is broadcast in over 150 countries worldwide. The day of the Super Bowl has effectively become an unofficial national holiday, known as "Super Bowl Sunday," and consistently ranks as the most-watched television sporting event in the country.

College football, governed by the NCAA, is also immensely popular, especially in regions without professional teams. Some college stadiums can seat over 100,000 spectators, frequently selling out their tickets. Even high school games often attract audiences exceeding 10,000 people, particularly in football-enthusiastic states such as Texas, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. In many smaller towns, weekly college and high school football games, along with accompanying marching band and cheerleader performances, form an essential part of local culture during the autumn season.

Outside the U.S., American football has a presence mainly in Europe, where a league with teams from countries such as Germany and the Netherlands competes. It also has amateur followings in countries like Japan, Australia, and Mexico.
