Step 6: Choose the racket poundage

The tension of the string on the racket frame after the badminton racket is strung is expressed in lbs (pounds), which indicates tightness. The higher the poundage, the tighter the string, the less elastic it becomes, and the more wrist strength is required. The lower the poundage, the greater the elasticity, the easier it is to generate power, and the more suitable it is for beginners.

Regarding how to choose poundage at each stage, here is a summary:

Beginners: low poundage (23–24 lbs)

Advanced players: medium poundage (24–26 lbs)

Quasi-experts: medium-high poundage (26–28 lbs)

Athletes: high poundage (above 28 lbs)

Attention! A tension below 22 lbs provides very poor hitting feel and is not recommended. Beginners should not exceed 25 lbs at the start! When you eventually feel that your shots are too slow and you have learned to apply force correctly, consider increasing the poundage. The tension that suits you is the best choice. Blindly choosing a high poundage can easily lead to injury.

Step 7: Check the balance point of the racket
The balance point is the distance from the racket's center of gravity to the bottom of the handle. The balance point of a badminton racket generally ranges from 280 mm to 320 mm. The larger the value, the farther the center of gravity is from the handle, making the racket head heavier. The smaller the value, the lighter the racket head.

How to choose the balance point:

If you prefer attacking and smashing, choose a head-heavy racket. Smashes are more powerful, but swing speed is slower, which makes it less suitable for defense.

A head-light racket swings effortlessly, but it is harder to generate powerful smashes and more difficult to clear deep shots from the backcourt, making it better for defense.

Beginners are advised to choose an even-balanced racket, which supports both offense and defense. Later, you can select either an offensive or defensive racket depending on your playing style.
