How to Use Barbells Correctly During Your Workout
If you are new to barbells, it is recommended to start by incorporating one or two barbell exercises into your full-body workout, practicing two to three times a week. This allows ample time to familiarize yourself with some barbell movements while still getting an effective workout that makes you feel comfortable and confident. As your confidence grows, you can incorporate more exercises.
You will also need to adjust your usual rep and set routine. If you're used to doing three sets of 12 reps with dumbbells, try switching to four sets of 5 reps with a barbell. The goal here is to use heavier weights without needing to perform as many reps (and you probably wouldn't be able to anyway!).
Additionally, you should ensure you maintain proper barbell form throughout your workout. This will help prevent injuries and ensure you get the most out of your workout.
Proper Barbell Form
When the barbell is positioned below your hips, your hands should be shoulder-width apart or just outside your legs.
When the barbell is above your hips-typically at chest or shoulder level-your hands should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
Keep your back straight.
Remember, the general form for any exercise is the same, whether or not you're using a barbell. That's why it's important to master the movement before incorporating a barbell into your routine.
