PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

1. Fair Territory

Fair Territory is the area bounded by the baselines (including the lines) from home plate past first and third base, extending to the outfield fence and including the vertical plane above.

2. Fielder

Any defensive player actively participating in the field is referred to as a Fielder.

3. Fielder's Choice

A Fielder's Choice occurs when a fielder chooses to put out a preceding baserunner instead of the batter-runner.

Also used in scorekeeping when:

(A) The batter-runner advances because the defense attempted to get another runner out.

(B) A runner advances because the defense tried to make a play elsewhere.

(C) A runner advances due to defensive negligence (excluding errors or stolen bases).

4. Fly Ball

A Fly Ball is any ball hit high into the air.

5. Force Play

A Force Play is when a runner is compelled to advance due to the batter becoming a runner, and the defense records an out by touching the next base before the runner arrives.

Note:

A force play can be removed if the batter-runner is put out before reaching first.

Timing is crucial: if another runner scores before the third out on a force play, the run may or may not count depending on sequence and timing.

6. Forfeited Game

A Forfeited Game is awarded by the umpire to one team, typically with a score of 9–0, due to rule violations or misconduct by the other team.

7. Foul Ball

A Foul Ball is a legally batted ball that:

(1) Comes to rest in foul territory between home and first or third base;

(2) Rolls into foul territory before reaching first or third base;

(3) Lands first in foul territory beyond first or third base;

(4) Touches a player, umpire, or object in foul territory.
