Custom Mouth Guard

A mouthguard, commonly known as a dental guard or mouthpiece, is a type of protective equipment that is frequently used in high-risk, high-impact sports.

In addition to combat sports such as boxing, mouthguards are also used in sports such as rugby, basketball, and snow sports.

Don't let its small size fool you-it has a history of at least 70 years since its invention. The origins of the mouthguard can be traced back to the late 19th century and early 20th century. Early boxers used a variety of oral protective gear, including cotton or sponge stuffed in their mouths, chewing on rubber strips, or even small pieces of wood. These diverse "mouthguards" must have caused quite a discomfort in the mouth, and their protective effects were far from ideal.

The introduction of this mouthguard can be considered the first truly reusable oral protective gear.

The first professional boxer to use a rubber mouthguard was Ted Lewis, a friend of Phillip Krause, during the 1921 welterweight championship bout. Lewis was the first to use a rubber mouthguard, but this innovation was not widely adopted at the time. By 1927, during a boxing match, Mike McTigue, who had been dominating the fight, had to withdraw due to a bleeding lip caused by his teeth, ultimately conceding the match. Following this incident, mouthguards began to gain increasing favor among boxers and truly gained popularity.

Wearing a mouthguard forces the wearer's mouth muscles to clench tightly, keeping them in a constant state of tension. When subjected to external force, the facial muscles naturally generate a counterforce. This principle leverages the concept of increasing surface area to reduce pressure. By securing all teeth and gums in the mouth as a unified unit, it effectively prevents destructive impact forces from affecting individual teeth. This is akin to how a single chopstick is easily broken, but a bundle of chopsticks remains unbreakable.
