1. Skirt
The skirt of the mask is also important, as it creates a sealed environment underwater to prevent water from entering the mask. Almost all masks are now made of silicone, but softness and quality may vary depending on price. Color is also important. Black skirts do not fade over time, and you will see many professional divers opt for black because they use their gear frequently. Transparent silicone allows a lot of light to pass through, which is useful for underwater models or those who want more peripheral vision. There are now multiple colors available, and you can even match your fins, snorkel, or wetsuit.
2. Perfect Fit
The fit and comfort of the mask are also crucial. Here's a useful tip to test if the mask fits you: first place the mask on your face without tightening or securing the strap, and remove any hair that might be trapped under the skirt. Then gently inhale to let the mask naturally adhere to your face. If the mask fits properly, you should feel it stay in place during inhalation. If you feel air entering the mask through the skirt seal, carefully check your position and try again (pro tip: check the smaller auxiliary skirt inside the mask; if it also seals well against your face, you have a mask that fits you). People with facial hair may find it difficult to achieve a seal, as hair often interferes with sealing, but you can help resolve this issue by shaving and/or applying a healthy layer of Vaseline.
