Scuba Diving And Snorkeling

A common misconception is that snorkels are part of the mask structure. In fact, they are simply positioned together for convenience. The snorkel is attached to the mask strap, allowing divers to easily switch between the snorkel and their second-stage regulator, especially at the surface. A fixed clip on the snorkel body secures it to the left side of the mask near the lens.

Looking down from the clip, you'll notice some snorkels have a pleated section near the bottom where water accumulates. This pleating works like that on a bendable straw, allowing you to adjust the angle between the snorkel and the horizontal plane. Some snorkels lack this feature and maintain a fixed J-shape.

Types of Snorkels

While snorkels appear simple, they vary in function, appearance, and suitability for different types of diving. Although price may not always correspond with performance, the most important factor is choosing based on your needs. As mentioned, wave-resistant designs are found in certain snorkels. We can categorize them by function into three main types: wet snorkels, semi-dry snorkels, and fully dry snorkels. This classification is based on functionality; snorkels within the same type may look different externally.

1. Wet Snorkel

This is the simplest type in terms of design and structure, consisting only of the tube, mouthpiece, and attachment clip. It has no wave-resistant features or water barrier at the top, leaving the opening completely exposed. As a result, frequent clearing is necessary-hence the name "wet snorkel."

This type is commonly used in beginner diving instruction because it allows students to learn and practice basic water-clearing techniques. Even as snorkel technology evolves, mastering these fundamental skills is essential for safety. Because of its simple design, the wet snorkel is the lightest and most effortless to use, making it a favorite in freediving.
