Semi-Dry Suit

Semi-dry suits are specifically designed for diving in cold to temperate waters, offering a high level of thermal protection while remaining more flexible and easier to use than dry suits. These suits are typically worn with additional accessories such as a hood, gloves, and boots to minimize heat loss through exposed skin.

Like traditional wetsuits, semi-dry suits are made from neoprene and function by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the body. This water layer is quickly warmed by body heat, creating a buffer that helps insulate the diver. However, unlike standard wetsuits, semi-dry suits feature tight seals around the wrists, ankles, neck, and often the hood area. These seals significantly reduce water exchange, which helps retain warmth more effectively and prevents cold water from constantly flushing through the suit.

Modern semi-dry suits often use thicker neoprene, typically ranging from 5mm to 7mm, and may include a two-piece construction consisting of an inner core suit and an outer jacket layer. This layering system enhances thermal efficiency but can reduce flexibility, especially when dry. Divers may find that thicker neoprene restricts movement on land or while gearing up.

To address this, some newer models incorporate ultra-stretch or hybrid materials that maintain excellent insulation while providing increased mobility and ease of donning and doffing. These suits offer a great balance between warmth, comfort, and practicality, making them ideal for recreational divers who frequently dive in colder waters but do not need the full features of a dry suit.

Despite their advantages, semi-dry suits do allow some water in, meaning the diver's body will still be damp after the dive. In very cold conditions, this can be uncomfortable, which is why some divers still prefer the complete dryness offered by a dry suit.
