Diving suits are made from neoprene chloroprene rubber (also known as foam rubber) and synthetic fibre fabric. They are divided into wet suits (WET SUITS) and dry suits (DRY SUITS). For recreational diving, wet suits are generally preferred, and it is best to have them custom-made for a proper fit.
The primary function of a diving suit is to prevent significant heat loss, thereby maintaining body temperature. Even in the hottest days of the tropical season, it is advisable to wear an appropriate diving suit, as water temperatures at depth are lower, and diving activities are typically less strenuous than swimming. Cold temperatures can lead to fatigue, slowed reactions, and muscle cramps. Therefore, having a wetsuit of appropriate thickness and proper fit is absolutely necessary; secondly, it protects the diver's skin from bruises and abrasions; additionally, the wetsuit provides some buoyancy.
How Should Beginners Choose a Diving Suit?
For new divers, here are some suggestions:
Start with a wet suit, especially if you're unsure about long-term diving plans.
If planning to try ice diving, rent a dry suit first to test it out before buying.
Avoid investing in an expensive dry suit unless you've completed dry suit specialty training.
For wet suits, a 3mm or 5mm one-piece is a solid choice, and can be paired with a thermal undersuit for added protection.
If you plan to dive long-term, consider enrolling in a dry suit course to understand technical diving concepts and gear management.
There's no absolute superiority between wet suits and dry suits-they're like different clothes for different occasions: you wouldn't wear a down jacket in Hainan, nor shorts on Changbai Mountain.
Your diving suit choice depends on your destination, dive type, temperature, and budget.
Many technical divers began as regular Open Water (OW) students on tropical islands. Starting with a wet suit, transitioning to a dry suit, and then entering the world of technical diving is a natural progression for many.
