Analysis of Common Rules
🔍 Clarification 1: Can you take a few steps after catching the ball?
Absolutely not. After catching the ball, you must decelerate and come to a stop as quickly as possible, then immediately establish your pivot foot. Once you've come to a complete stop, you cannot move either foot (lifting your pivot foot counts as a traveling violation). The only exception is: if you catch the ball while running at high speed, you are allowed a few meters to decelerate, but you must not actively change direction or accelerate during the deceleration, and you must not move your feet once you have come to a complete stop.
💡 Quick Tip: If your feet slip slightly after you've stopped or if you switch which foot is your pivot foot, that counts as a travel.
💍 Clarification 2: When does the defensive count start?
The defender should approach and begin counting immediately after the disc-carrier lands. If the disc-carrier is still in the air or has just landed and hasn't regained balance, the defender may approach but should not start counting. The count must be loud enough for the disc-carrier to hear, typically with about a one-second pause between each count.
🔍 Clarification 3: Can off-ball players perform a "pick-and-roll"?
No. Intentional screening (picking) is prohibited in Ultimate Frisbee. Offensive players without the disc may not intentionally block a defender's path by altering their running route. If this occurs, the defense may call "Pick!" to stop play. The screened defender may return to a legal position, and play resumes with a throw-in. Of course, normal positioning and natural obstructions caused by speed differences do not constitute a foul; the key is "intentionality."
