A ball at rest is moved
After a ball is in play, if any of the following occurs, you will be penalized 1 stroke and must put it back in place: it is accidentally moved; it is lifted when the rules do not allow it. If someone other than your partner or caddie moves the ball at rest, or it is moved by another ball, you will not be penalized, but you must put the ball back in place. If the ball at rest is blown by the wind or moves for its own reasons, there is no penalty, just continue to play the ball from its current position.
A ball in motion is deflected or stopped
If a hit ball is deflected or stopped by yourself, your partner, your caddie or equipment, you will be penalized 1 stroke, and then continue to play the ball from its current position (Rule of Golf 19-2). If a hit ball is deflected or stopped by another ball at rest, there is usually no penalty, just continue to play the ball from its current position. Only in stroke play, if both balls are on the putting green before you hit the ball, you will be penalized 2 strokes.
Lifting, dropping and placing the ball
Before lifting a ball that needs to be placed back in place, the position of the ball must be marked. When lifting a ball for dropping or placing it in another position, the position of the ball does not need to be marked. When dropping a ball, stand upright, hold the ball at shoulder height with your arms straight, and then let it fall naturally. Common situations where you must re-drop the ball: after dropping the ball, the ball rolls to a place where it is still hindered by the situation; the ball comes to rest two clubs away from the drop point; the ball comes to rest nearer the hole. After re-dropping the ball, the ball rolls to the above positions again, and the ball is placed at the place where it first touches the court when re-dropped.
