A gymnastics stick is a cylindrical wooden implement measuring 1 to 1.2 meters in length and approximately 2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, with a smooth, painted surface. It is a classic tool for rehabilitation training, though everyday items such as rolling pins, clothes hangers, or broomsticks can sometimes be used as substitutes.
Who is it suitable for?
1. Patients with hemiplegia following a stroke (especially those with upper limb dysfunction)
2. Individuals needing to improve scapular mobility and shoulder-elbow-wrist coordination
3. Rehabilitation patients seeking to enhance trunk stability and upper limb muscle strength
What can gymnastic stick training improve?
1. Improve upper limb joint range of motion (shoulder, elbow, wrist)
2. Promotes normal movement in patients with hemiplegia
3. Enhances muscle strength and endurance in the shoulder and surrounding areas
4. Improves trunk control and coordination
5. Promotes recovery of activities of daily living (ADL)
How to perform exercise bar training?
Basic Movement Training
Shoulder Forward Flexion:
Seated or standing, hold the bar with both hands; use the unaffected side to lead the affected side in raising the bar to chin level or higher, while suppressing abnormal movement patterns;
Shoulder Abduction:
Standing position, grip the exercise bar with palms facing up, and slowly abduct the arms to shoulder-parallel height;
Elbow Extension:
Seated position, hold the bar with both hands and place one end on a table; raise the bar vertically to extend the elbow joint;
Wrist Extension:
Seated position, with the forearm stabilized, grip the end of the bar and perform wrist extension movements.
Advanced Functional Training
Scapular Activation:
Seated position: Rotate the bar up and down with one hand while the other hand remains stationary to activate the serratus anterior muscle;
Trunk Anti-Gravity Training:
Standing position: Hold the bar with both hands and extend it backward to the maximum range to strengthen trunk stability;
Isolated Movement Training:
Seated position: Alternately pronate and supinate the forearms while rotating the exercise bar to improve coordination.
