Rhythmic Gymnastics Stick

A gymnastic stick is a wooden stick used by children to perform gymnastic exercises to improve their limb mobility.

Made of synthetic material, it is 40-50 cm long and weighs over 150 grams. It is shaped like a bottle, with a narrow neck, a thick body, and a top. Competitions involve choreographed movements such as rolling, circling, spinning, throwing, catching, swinging, jumping, balancing, and striking.

It should be 3-4 cm in diameter and 80-120 cm long. The surface should be smooth and not prone to breakage.

Main Functions: 1. Inhibit upper limb flexor spasms;2. Improve shoulder, elbow, and wrist control;3. Induce active forearm supination;4. Expand the range of motion of the shoulder joint and improve upper limb muscle strength.

Application Methods and Scope: The child sits or stands, holds the gymnastic stick with both hands shoulder-width apart, flexes their shoulders, and extends their elbows. The child then performs movements such as raising, extending, and retracting the upper limbs. The shoulder can also be abducted and placed behind the body to perform internal and external rotation exercises. This exercise is suitable for children with hemiplegia, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, and shoulder dysfunction.

Advanced Functional Exercises:

1. Scapular Activation: While seated, rotate a bar up and down with one hand while holding the other hand fixed to activate the serratus anterior muscle.

2. Trunk Anti-Gravity Training: While standing, extend the bar backward with both hands to the maximum range of motion to strengthen trunk stability.

3. Isolated Movement Training: While seated, rotate the bar alternately with the forearm pronated and supinated to improve coordination.

Notes: 1. Increase the intensity of the exercise gradually to avoid excessive fatigue.

2. Perform exercises within a pain-free range and avoid compensatory movements (such as shrugging or trunk tilting).

3. In special cases, a personalized training plan should be developed under the guidance of a therapist.
